Warmingham Lane was the venue on Sunday for round 2 of the exciting, all-action BWMA British Women's Motocross Championship.
The AMCA Sandbach Club spent a lot of time preparing a Championship quality track and spent the night soaking the track in anticipation of hot dry day. Lots of water went down making qualifying very tricky. There were some surprises and this fast jumpy, technical hard pack track closed the field up nicely.Chelsea Gowland was up front again but closely followed by Leonni Tighe and Catherine King with Bethany Farmer struggling following a fall . Vicky Marriott more comfortable on this surface and almost fully recovered from her pre season injury put in an encouraging 6th place..
The temperature was rising making for a hot day but the overnight watering kept the dust at bay. Catherine King got the Bel Ray holeshot, and led for the first half lap before the being taken by Chelsea Gowland, Leonnit Tighe was next to pass closely followed by Beth Farmer, The lap times of the top three were within only a second with Beth and Chelsea posting identical best times, The battle between Beth and Leonni was close until Beth managed to squeeze by on lap 3. The fast Scott Ciara Robertson had a big crash on the first lap putting her right down but bravely fought her way back up to 13th by the finish. A huge battle raged for 5th place between Georgia Ithell, Eleanor Calby and Charlotte Hall while Vicky Marriott did her best to hold off Millie King for 8th place at the back of that battle, with two laps to go Millie got by to take the place off Vicky. It was great to see every rider racing hard throughout the field with Leah Monks, Lauren Hurst and Hannah Stone bringing up the lower order but still racing their own race.
Unfortunately there was bad crash in the Inter Juniors which left two riders with broken bones and a two hour delay. This allowed the track to bake and dry out in the mid day sun. Once running the Bel Ray holeshot was won this time by Chelsea Gowland who led from the start to clock up her second win of the day. Frustratingly Beth Farmer was on similar times but just out of reach to put pressure on Gowland. Again the young 16 year old Leonni Tighe put in another great ride heading the chasing pack and finishing in another great 3rd place but pushing hard was Georgia Ithell who had a great ride leading the chasing bunch of Camilla King, the fast Scott Ciara Robertson and the unfortunate Catherine King who crashed heavily on the last penultimate lap quickly getting going in front of the battle between Vicky Marriott and Charlotte Hall with less than 1 second splitting the 3 at the finish.
The delay meant the club had to cancel the last block of racing but they allowed us to run our 3rd race shortened from 15 minutes to 12 minutes + 1 lap. The sun had made it very dusty and slick but didn’t stop the girls producing some great racing. Catherine King won her second Bel Ray holeshot of the day putting her up the table level with Beth Farmer and one behind Chelsea. As the race progressed the girls settled to a familiar pattern with Beth chasing second followed by the hard charging Leonni Tighe and Catherine King settling in fourth place. The impressive Georgia Ithell was on for a great overall but a fall dropped her down the field to finish the race in 11th. Her best race of the day was the promising young Charlotte Hall who raced to a great 5th place just beating Camilla King in 6th. The following places were closely fought between Eleanor Calby, Ciara Robertson and Vicky Marriott who got her 3rd 9th place of the day.
